According to Korean media, Chinese panel makers BOE and TCL CSOT will participate in the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for Samsung Electronics' low-cost Galaxy M54 smartphone to be launched next year. However, whether Samsung Display will participate in the development of the corresponding OLED model has not been confirmed. BOE and Samsung Display supplied the OLED for this year's Galaxy M53.
According to industry sources on Monday, Samsung Electronics will develop an OLED screen for its low-cost smartphone Galaxy M54, which will be launched next year. Boe and TCL China Star will develop the OLED screen.
Whether Samsung Display will participate in the OLED development of the Galaxy M54 has not yet been confirmed, but it will decide whether to do so depending on the development status of BOE and TCL CSOT, as well as changes in the volume plan of Samsung Electronics. BOE and Samsung Display supply the OLED for M53, which will be launched this year. Boe has a slightly leading share of the OLED for M53.
The Galaxy M5 series is a affordable model that is mainly sold on the Internet, including in Southeast Asia. The number of units sold was in the millions, less than the mid-priced Galaxy A series, which shipped 30 million to 40 million units.
Samsung Electronics has been using BOE and TCL CSOT screens in its Galaxy smartphones for years to lower the unit price, the report said.
Samsung Electronics is competing with Chinese smartphone companies in the mid - to low-end segment as its market position is shrinking as Apple dominates the high-end smartphone market. Samsung's forecast for annual smartphone shipments this year has been reduced from 300 million units in 2019 to 270 million units recently, while the OLED adoption rate of the Galaxy series has also dropped from more than 60 percent to 50 percent over the same period.
On the other hand, as the proportion of LCD models in Samsung's smartphones has increased by half, Samsung Display's forecast of rigid OLED shipments has also decreased. Samsung initially planned to launch the Galaxy A24 next year as an LCD model, but recently switched to a rigid OLED model, which Samsung Display has purchased entirely. A total of 20 million A24 models have been sold.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display will exclusively supply OLED for Samsung Electronics smartphones until 2020. Last year, TCL CSOT provided OLED for Samsung's Galaxy M series sold in the Indian market. This is the first time that a company other than Samsung Display has supplied Chttps://gestantdisplay.com/list-amoled.html for smartphones to Samsung Electronics.
"Samsung Electronics will purchase 3.5 million OLED panels from BOE and 3 million OLED panels from TCL CSOT this year," said Mizuho Securities researcher Yubi in a survey conducted in April. The two companies combined forecast sales of 6.5 million units. Last year, the total was 800,000 units (BOE 500,000 units and TCL CSOT 300,000 units), an eight-fold increase. "As a result, Samsung's share of the smartphone OLED market is expected to fall from 99 percent last year to 96 percent this year."
