Recently, according to the latest Micro-LED Display Technology and Market Outlook Report released by DSCC, the Micro-LED display market is still small, but it is expected to reach 1.3 billion dollars by 2027. Reducing manufacturing costs will be necessary before micro-leds can compete with other technologies.
DSCC analysts said, "Micro-LED was initially seen as an ideal leading display technology for all applications, but the hype has faded and OLED has conquered the smartphone market and continues to improve, while LCD still offers unbeatable value for money. Micro-LED can only be used as a leading technology for ultra-large TVS or smart glasses."
Some companies are now marketing LED video walls as Micro-LED displays. However, the on-board chip (COB) method used by these displays is closer to the Mini LED technology found in some LCD backlights.
Micro-LED displays transfer a large number of individual LED chips onto the display substrate, which requires specialized equipment with high precision. While there have been some demonstrations of Micro-LED displays, the only commercially available product on the market is Samsung's Micro-LED TV.
According to the DSCC report, the price of Micro-LED TVS will remain too high to gain significant market share in the TV segment in the next five years. This year, Samsung has also introduced QD-OLED, a high-end TV display technology.
Apple has been working on Micro-LED technology since it acquired LuxVue, a startup developing massive transfer technology, back in 2014. However, Apple doesn't seem to be in a rush to introduce micro-leds into its products. Apple is increasing the penetration rate of LTPO OLED in its small and medium applications. Its smartwatches were early adopters of LTPO OLED technology. The small size and low pixels of smartwatches are also advantages of the massive transfer of MicroLED, and Apple will later introduce Micro-LED in its wearable products. DSCC expects wearables to eventually become the largest niche application market for Micro-LED display sizes.
