Japan's JOLED (a combination of Panasonic and SONY's OLED businesses) has developed the world's first printed 65-inch OLED screen using its own printing technology. It is part of a business model that makes money from technology licensing fees. The company has jointly produced the product with China Star OptoElectronics Technology, a subsidiary of China's TCL, which will launch a capital business partnership in 2020. In the future, China Star Optoelectronics will be responsible for mass production and sales.
The previous maximum screen size was 32 inches. The size of the product is increased by the same method of wiring with low resistance. JOLED specializes in printing by coating luminescent material onto a panel substrate using a device similar to an inkjet printer. Compared with evaporation, which uses an expensive mask to attach the luminescent material to the substrate, the printing method has simple production equipment and is suitable for making large screens. According to statistics from research companies, production costs can be reduced by about 30 percent.
In terms of the quality of the screen, it is also the printing method of high color accuracy, which can increase the depth of the image. "The technology we inherited from Panasonic and SONY laid the foundation for this," said Yoshi Ishibashi, JOLED's president. South Korean companies own 80 percent of the global OLED market, but JOLED aims to expand its business with technical capabilities that South Korean companies do not have.
JOLED was founded in 2015 under the leadership of the Japanese government with the goal of developing OLED screens in Japan. The company's performance has been sluggish, squeezed by cash-rich South Korean companies and Chinese companies that have beefed up equipment with state support. Although the factory in Ishikawa Prefecture began mass-producing OLED screens by printing for the first time in the world in 2020, it still posted a final loss of 23.9 billion yen in fiscal 2021 (ended March 2022).
South Korea's Samsung Electronics and LG Display have a large share of the global OLED market. According to Omdia, Samsung will account for 60.1 percent of shipments in 2021, while LG Display will account for 22.1 percent. Chinese companies are also increasing their share, with Chinese and South Korean companies accounting for more than 90 percent of the total. Overseas manufacturers are also developing large-size printed screens.
