Apple began to introduce mini LED panels on its iPad and Macbook products in 2021, but it seems that it does not intend to expand the scope of its use. According to The Elec, Apple will use OLED panels on tablets and laptops in the future, which will affect the shipment of mini LED panels.
Previously, it was reported that Apple might adopt the Hybrid OLED technology, which means the OLED panel mixed with rigid OLED panel and flexible OLED panel technology. Rigid OLED panels and flexible OLED panels have different substrate materials. The former is glass, the latter is plastic, mainly polyimide, which will be encapsulated for protection. Hybird OLED technology will use the glass substrate of rigid OLED panel and the film packaging of flexible OLED panel.
Apple hopes to use the OLED panel with double stack structure on iPad and Macbook products, which will have two emission layers (EML). This is different from the single-layer structure adopted by most smart phones at this stage. At the same time, the brightness will be doubled, and the service life will also reach four times. It is rumored that Apple will take the lead in using OLED panel on iPad Pro next year, and will use it for 13-inch MacBook Air in 2025.
Although Apple will not increase the purchase of mini LED panels, many TV manufacturers still choose to use them in high-end televisions, at least until 2027. It is expected that the mini LED panel will shift more to TV and display in three years, and the purchase volume of notebook computers will decrease.
