Samsung Display will begin production of Apple's iPad OLED TFT this week. Apple's first OLED iPad shipment forecast for this year is 8 million units, 2 million units lower than the industry expected last year. Apple's expected shipping date for the finished OLED iPad is April. According to Korean media reports, industry sources said on the 16th that Samsung Display plans to start production of low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin film transistor (TFT) for Apple iPad 11-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) this week. The display is produced from the TFT, which acts as a switch that turns OLED pixels on and off.

However, before Samsung Display, LG Display has recently started producing TFT for 13-inch iPad OLEDs. LG Display is also expected to start producing 11-inch iPad OLED TFT around the same time as Samsung Display.

Apple's OLED iPad, released for the first time this year, comes in 13-inch and 11-inch models. LG Display will produce both 13-inch and 11-inch models, while Samsung Display will produce only one (11-inch) model. According to reports, production yield and manufacturing costs may become variables in the performance of the two panel companies.

The advantages and environments of the two panel companies are different. Samsung Display has the leading experience in mass production of LTPO TFT, while LG Display has relatively more experience in mass production of TwoStackTandem, which stacks the luminous layer into two layers.

In addition, the factory depreciation cost is also a variable. For the first time, LG Display is operating its sixth generation IT OLED production line, the E6-4 production line, in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. After investing 3.3 trillion won, LG Display announced in December last year that it will invest 103.8 billion won in related production lines from the second quarter to the fourth quarter of this year. Starting this year, the price of E6-4 mass-produced OLeds will be affected by depreciation costs; Samsung Display plans to produce iPad OLeds at its A3 production line in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, and the depreciation of the production line has ended, so the manufacturing cost is relatively surplus.

It is understood that LG Display is seeking to reduce manufacturing costs by increasing the proportion of Chinese companies in some non-Apple-designated components (non-designated parts). For non-specified parts, panel companies can choose suppliers.

The finished Apple OLED iPad is expected to start production in March and is expected to be released around April. Sales of Apple's OLED iPad are expected to be a test case for the IT product OLED market. The recent downturn in the IT industry and rising iPad prices due to OLED applications will be obstacles for Apple's iPad business this year. Among Apple products, IT products such as the iPad have lower consumer loyalty than the iPhone, so they also need to offset the price increase factor brought by OLED applications.
