China is closely following South Korea in the global organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display market. While South Korea is still far ahead of China in terms of market share, the gap between China and South Korea in terms of capacity is only 10%.

Global market research firm Trendforce said in a report on July 25 that China's OLED display production capacity is 43.7%, while South Korea's is 54.9%.

Just five years ago, China's OLED display production capacity was less than 10%. Today, that figure is more than 40%, just 105 behind South Korea.

According to market research firm Omdia, in the small and medium-sized OLED display market, Samsung Display once held more than 80% of the market share, the first quarter of this year fell to 54.7%.

At the same time, China BOE, which had been in a fierce competition with LG Display for second place, jumped to second place with a 19.2% share in the first quarter, beating LG Display's 17.4% share.

China is increasingly dominant in the global liquid crystal display (LCD) market. In 2022, China's LCD market share will be 55.5%, Taiwan's 27.6%, South Korea's 13.5%, and Japan's 2.9%.

Display industry players are concerned that China is gaining market share in OLED displays at a faster rate than it has in the past in the LCD market.

According to the Korea Display Industry Association, it took China 10 years to reach 20% of the global market share in small and medium-sized LCD displays, and eight years to reach 20% of the global market share in small and medium-sized OLED displays. In order to prevent China from catching up in the OLED display market, South Korean companies are doing all they can to invest heavily in OLED displays.

In April, Samsung Display announced that IT will invest a total of 4.1 trillion won by 2026 to build the world's first 8.6-generation IT OLED display production facility in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. The aim is to significantly widen the gap with Chinese rivals in OLED display technology.
