Samsung Display renamed its L7 and L8 factories, which used to produce LCD panels, to A4 and A5. From the name unity with the existing A2 and A3 plants. The name of the new plant, previously known as "A5," is also expected to change.

According to industry sources, Samsung Display recently announced the new L7 and L8 factory names, A4 and A5, respectively.

L7 and L8 are factories that used to produce liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. L7 produces the 7th generation LCD, and L8 produces the 8th generation LCD. In L7 and L8, the space that first stopped running was converted to small and medium-sized organic light emitting diode (OLED) and large quantum dot (QD) -OLED, respectively, and the production line has been started.

On L7, which consists of L7-1 and L7-2, L7-1 produced small and medium-sized OLeds after the LCD production line was discontinued in 2016. At this time, the name of the L7-1 factory was changed to A4-1 for a time. After that, the L7-2 was also discontinued, and was also named A4E.

On L8, which is composed of L8-1 and L8-2, L8-1 stopped the operation of the LCD production line between 2019 and 2021, and mass produced large QD-OLED here. This is called Q1, which means the first QD line. L8-2 stopped LCD production in the first half of last year, and is currently in the process of dismantling IT for the introduction of 8.6-generation OLED equipment.

As Samsung Display announced the L8 factory as A5, officials in charge speculated that the existing Q1 line will be called the "A5QD line," and the eighth-generation OLED line for IT will be called the "A5IT line."

In addition, Samsung Display has given the L8 plant a new name of A5, which is expected to change the name of the new plant, which used to be called A5. Due to repeated interruptions and restarts, no obvious application site has been identified for the currently suspended A5.

So far, Samsung Display's A2 is 5.5 generation OLED, A3 is 6 generation OLED, A4 is 6 generation OLED, A5 is 8.5 generation QD-OLED and 8.6 generation IT OLED. The A before the factory name stands for AMOLED.
