According to thelec news on July 25, Japan SEL was found that Samsung Display has proposed to buy its OLED patent without FMM. It is understood that SEL has also demonstrated the formation of OLEDs in vacuum for Samsung Display.

SEL is a research-oriented company that increases sales primarily through its patent licensing business after filing (applying for) and registering patents. As of the 25th, SEL has published and registered 4,284 patents in South Korea.

SEL's proposal that Samsung display buy its "FMM-free OLED technology" is a recent area of concern in the display industry. It is expected that the pixel density of RGB small and medium-sized OLEDs manufactured by FMM produced by existing etching methods can reach 1000PPI(pixels per inch), but it is considered difficult to use OLED on Silicon(OLEDoS) panel devices that require XR devices of more than 3000PPI.

Last year, Japan's JDI unveiled its "eLEAP" technology, which forms OLEDs through a semiconductor exposure process rather than using FMM. At SID 2023, the world's largest display society held in the United States in May, JDI and SEL, China's Visionox (technical name: ViP) and Soongsil University in South Korea demonstrated OLED technology that does not use FMM.

Among them, SEL's technology allegedly caught the attention of SID visitors, including the Samsung display at the time.

In addition, as SEL explained at SID 2023, the process sequence for the known packaging (which protects OLEDs from moisture and oxygen) is different from that of other companies. An industry source said that JDI and Visionox technology are exposed after the packaging process, while SEL is packaged after the exposure process. He added: Since OLEDs can be exposed to moisture and oxygen during the wet etching process in the exposure process, the packaging process is performed first.

According to the person in charge, it is understood that it is difficult to fully grasp the technical characteristics of SEL based only on the SID exhibition at that time and the patents that have been published. Samsung Display is expected to review the patent purchase proposal after additional consideration of the patentability, volume production and price of SEL technology.

It is expected that Korean panel makers such as Samsung Display will also have to prepare for OLED technology that does not use FMM, which has recently attracted the attention of the Korean industry. Although it is difficult to realize commercialization immediately, it can bring no small changes to the OLED market after it is truly commercialized. But even at this point, Samsung Display doesn't necessarily have to buy SEL patents. The technology can be obtained directly through Samsung Display's own research institute and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, and there are also ways to sign a patent license agreement with SEL. Another South Korean industry source estimated that if the SEL technology and JDI's eLEAP technology can be mass-produced, the Japanese government will also support mass production.

At the same time, Samsung Display is focusing on developing RGB mode OLEDos, such as the acquisition of U.S. RGB OLEDos company eMagin for 290 billion won in May. Samsung Display is also reviewing FMM, a laser patterning method for APS. Since Imagine RGB OLEDos uses the so-called "fine silicon mask" (FSM) method, while APS uses the laser patterning method FMM, Samsung's OLED technology, which does not require FMM, could be an alternative.

Samsung Display believes that the RGB method, which deposits RGB sub-pixels adjacent to each other on the same layer, is more competitive than the existing "white (W)-OLED + color filter (CF)" method, OLEDos. WOLED+CF OLEDos uses OLEDs to emit white light and achieve color through a color filter, but the brightness (brightness) may be reduced during the process of passing through the color filter. The Vision Pro, which Apple launched in June, uses WOLED+CF mode OLEDos, produced by SONY of Japan.
