Apple has requested companies such as Samsung Display and LG Display to develop OLEDs and remove the front bezel of the iPhone. Samsung Display and LG Display must implement borderless OLED according to Apple's requirements, and must improve thin-film Encapsulation (TFE) and under panel camera (UPC) technology to ensure antenna space. At present, mass production still requires time.
According to industry reports on the 24th, companies such as Samsung Display and LG Display are developing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that eliminate the bezel of the iPhone's front display screen at Apple's request. Currently, Apple is thinning the border of the iPhone's front display screen, with the ultimate goal of reducing the border to zero.
It is reported that Apple hopes to achieve a borderless display while maintaining the edge design of the iPhone tablet display and product side.
This is different from the existing curved display screens of smartphone companies. It is reported that Apple has rejected Samsung Electronics' curved display technology, which has always been applicable to some models such as the flagship smartphone Galaxy S series. It is understood that if a curved display screen is used on the side of a smartphone, there will be a "magnifying glass effect" in optics, which Apple is very taboo about. In addition to optical distortion effects, if the display screen is designed to slide off the side of the product, it will not be subject to external impact.
It is reported that if this curved display screen is not used, in order to achieve Apple's desired borderless design, all the circuits in the current border part must be bent below the display screen in order to achieve it. At this point, it is necessary to ensure antenna space and address interference issues.
In order to achieve borderless screens, issues that need to be addressed include Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) and Under Panel Camera (UPC) technology. The outer film packaging of the product is thinner than it is now, and UPC should avoid being easily distinguished from the rest of the display area in order to expand the user's immersion.
The thin packaging that protects OLEDs from the influence of moisture and oxygen is formed by alternating thin layers of inorganic and organic films. Inorganic membranes block water and oxygen, while organic membranes block fine gaps on inorganic membranes, improving the overall flexibility of thin packaging. It is reported that apples require both inorganic and organic films to be thin. If the inorganic membrane becomes thinner, it is difficult to ensure isolation characteristics in order to protect OLED from water and oxygen invasion. If the organic membrane becomes thinner, it is difficult to prevent fine gaps in the inorganic membrane. At the same time, the application of touch integrated technology with built-in touch electrodes will also become difficult.
There are still many difficulties in achieving the borderless OLED that Apple hopes for. To this end, Apple is lowering the front border of the iPhone to the lowest possible level. The recent failure of LG Display to meet Apple's requirements is also related to Apple's attempt to thin the front and bottom borders of the iPhone 15 series Pro product line.
