OLED Removal of Polarizers: Maybe It's Just a Matter of Time

In the past two years, the screen of smart phones is getting bigger and bigger, and the resolution and refresh rate are getting higher and higher, which brings about the problem of fast power consumption and frequent charging needs. With the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung Display has officially unveiled its latest OLED upgrade technology -- Eco² OLED Plus. Compared with the Eco² OLED, a next-generation low-power OLED panel officially released by Samsung Display on August 16 last year, the new technology is a leap forward in both power consumption and clarity.


According to Samsung Display, Eco² OLED can reduce power consumption by 25 percent and increase light transmission by 33 percent compared with regular OLED. The latest Eco² OLED Plus technology can reduce power consumption by another 37% and increase light transmittance by a groundbreaking 160%.


Eco² OLED uses a screen layer that blocks reflections of external light, replacing the polarizer that is the core material of the display. In other words, Samsung's Eco² OLED is actually Pol-less OLED technology, which is a pole-less OLED display technology.


According to industry insiders, when the ambient light is strong, the display effect and contrast of the OLED screen will decrease significantly under the action of reflected light, making it difficult to see the screen. As a result, OLED screens have previously required polarizing plates to block reflected light. But as well as blocking the reflected light, the OLED screen also has to block some of the light it emits, with the result that the polarizer reduces the screen's transmittance. According to the properties of the polarizer, its transmittance is between 40% and 50%, while the transmittance of the color pixel layer in Pol-less technology is about 70% to 90%. Therefore, the light transmittance of Pol-less OLED panels is necessarily higher.


In addition, in order to ensure the overall display effect of OLED screen, it is necessary to increase the driving current and screen brightness, which leads to high screen power consumption and shortened service life. And Pol-less due to the improvement of the light transmittance of the OLED panel, the driving current of the OLED panel can be reduced while keeping the viewing brightness of the screen unchanged, which not only reduces the power consumption, but also prolongs the service life of the OLED panel.

Therefore, from the perspective of the development of OLED display technology, it is only a matter of time before the polarizer is removed.
