Industry Information | Launches the World's First OTFT Monolithic Micro LED Display

Recently, foreign media reported that SmartKem, a supplier of organic thin film transistor (OTFT) materials, announced the launch of what it claims to be the world's first single chip Micro LED display using OTFT. According to SmartKem, this new method of processing thin-film transistor backboards on GaN leds could reduce the manufacturing cost of Micro LED displays and accelerate their commercialization process.

According to foreign media reports, existing methods of manufacturing Micro LED displays require physically transferring the LED chip from the wafer to the backplane of the TFT display, and laser welding the LED to the contact plate of the transistor to establish a conductive connection.


For high-resolution displays, this process means moving millions of Micro LED chips around, increasing the likelihood of misplacement. The process of detecting these failures and replacing them one by one is slowing down the commercialization of Micro LED displays, and SmartKem's technology can solve these problems.


TRUFLEX ink, SmartKem's proprietary chemical technology, is a solution deposited on a low-cost substrate at low temperatures that can be used to manufacture organic thin film transistor (OTFT) circuits. At temperatures as low as 80°C, transistors can be processed directly on the Micro LED. This method eliminates the need for massive transfer and laser welding, speeding up the manufacturing process of Micro LED.


However, this method is not suitable for other types of thin-film transistors because they need to be processed at temperatures as high as 300°C, which can damage Micro LED chips.


It is also worth mentioning that in February last year, SmartKem had announced a partnership with Nanosys, an American supplier of Micro LED and quantum dot technology, to develop a new generation of low-cost solutions for advanced displays, printing Micro LED and quantum dot materials.


Under the agreement, SmartKem will supply organic thin film transistor (OTFT) backboards through TRUFLEX technology, and Nanosys will build Micro LED displays using Micro LED and electroluminescent quantum dot Nano LED technologies.


The two companies believe their collaboration will lead to a new type of low-power, high-strength, flexible and thin Micro LED display.
