On January 6, Samsung publicly showcased a crease-free foldable OLED panel for the first time. This panel is highly likely to be equipped on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldable smartphone, which is set to be released in the second half of this year. There is also no shortage of speculation that it may be applied to the iPhone Fold, Apple’s first foldable smartphone.
Visually, this foldable panel shows almost no creases at all. Samsung also specially set up a "crease test zone" to compare the new foldable panel with existing products. According to the official statement, the new panel can achieve "seamless text display across the folded area", reducing the obvious "line effect" in the middle of traditional foldable panels, thus delivering a more consistent and coherent viewing experience.
It is reported that the foldable panel exhibited by Samsung Display this time belongs to its brand-new "Mont Flex" technology line. Its core advantage is that it can maintain a highly flat display effect even in the folded state. Even when viewed from different angles, the center of the screen barely shows the creases common in previous foldable phones. Nor can a noticeable indentation be felt when touching the screen, which forms a significant difference from many currently available foldable phones on the market.
In addition, previous reports also stated that Samsung Display’s new foldable OLED panel adopts a laser-drilled metal backplane. This metal plate can disperse the stress generated when the phone screen is folded, thereby achieving the crease-free effect. This metal plate is supplied by Fine M-Tec, a South Korean enterprise. Sources said that Apple’s foldable iPhone will also adopt this component.
The market has long been rife with rumors that Apple is cooperating with Samsung Display to develop a dedicated display panel for the iPhone Fold, and Apple has set an extremely high threshold for crease performance.
