It is reported that Apple will launch its first foldable phone (hereinafter referred to as iPhone Fold) in 2026. On the one hand, it will significantly reduce screen creases, and on the other hand, it will be equipped with its self-developed C2 baseband chip, and adopt a SIM card free design and Touch ID unlocking. To minimize the visual impact of creases, Apple has decided to change the touch sensing layer of the screen from on cell technology to in cell technology. This design is consistent with the current non foldable iPhone screen technology, mainly making the sensor position closer to the inside of the screen, thereby reducing air gaps and creases.
According to the blog post, in the on cell screen, the touch sensor is located below the front glass and above the CF, with high touch sensitivity and relatively simple manufacturing. But this design may increase creases on folding screens due to interlayer gaps.
In cell technology places the touch layer below the CF and towards the inside of the screen, which helps to maintain a flat appearance.
In addition to screen technology, Apple will also install its self-developed second-generation C2 modem chip for the first time on the iPhone Fold. This chip continues the high energy efficiency advantage of the first generation C1 and is close to Qualcomm's similar products in cellular communication performance.
Johny Srouji, Senior Vice President of Hardware Technology at Apple, has stated that the self-developed modem is a "cross generational platform" that undergoes iterative optimization in each generation to create differentiated advantages in connectivity performance. This means that the C2 is not only designed for the iPhone Fold, but will also be applied to future products such as the iPhone 18 Pro series.
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the iPhone Fold tester is currently using black and white colors, and will not provide a physical SIM card slot. Instead, it will fully support eSIM and use Touch ID fingerprint recognition instead of Face ID facial unlocking.
