Samsung Display will launch the next generation of smartphone OLED screens with a maximum brightness of 5000 nits.

Samsung Display announced on February 27th that it will showcase OLED displays based on depolarization film display technology, also known as "OCF (On Cell Film)" technology, at MWC2025.

OCF refers to a technology that removes polarizing film and integrates the function of reducing reflection into the interior of the panel using thin films, special materials, etc.

OCF technology not only improves visibility outdoors, but also reduces power consumption and lays the foundation for design innovation. This technology has been extended from foldable smartphones to regular straight smartphones and rollable laptops.

Samsung Display's ultra-high brightness OLED screen showcased this time has a maximum screen brightness of up to 5000 nits.

This brightness is the proportion of pixels that are in working state in the screen to the total pixels, that is, the brightness level that can be achieved when the "On Pixel Ratio (OPR)" is 10%, and it can also reach a brightness of over 3000 nits in daily use environments such as watching movies.

Compared to the OLED screens used in recently launched high-end smartphones, its brightness is approximately 1.5 times higher at the same power consumption.

After long-term research, Samsung Display developed for the first time in the industry in 2021 a panel stack structure that can block external light reflection without the need for polarizing film.

Due to the removal of polarizing film, the degree of light attenuation is reduced by about half compared to traditional panels. Through this technology, the screen can emit more than 1.5 times the brightness with the same amount of power, or achieve the same brightness with only 63% of the power consumption of traditional panels.
