CINNO Research Industry News: LG Display will expand its supply of OLED panels to Apple's new iPhone series models. It is reported that the number of models supplied will increase from 2 to 3 this year. As a result, it is expected that the proportion of Apple's business in its overall revenue will also increase. It is understood that by 2023, Apple's business will account for approximately 40% of LG Display's revenue.
According to a report from the display industry on February 24th, LG Display will supply OLED panels for the regular models, Pro Max models, and the newly launched iPhone 17 Air model in Apple's iPhone 17 series this year. There are a total of four models launched by Apple this year, and except for the Pro model, all other models will be equipped with LG Display's OLED panel.
Previously, the OLED panels of Apple's iPhone series were supplied by three panel manufacturers: Samsung Display, LG Display, and Chinese manufacturer BOE. Taking the iPhone 16 series launched in the second half of last year as an example, the regular models are supplied by Samsung Display and BOE, the Plus models are exclusively supplied by Samsung Display, and the Pro and Pro Max models are supplied by Samsung Display and LG Display.
This is because Apple has decided for the first time to include low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels in all models of the iPhone 17 series. Previously, the regular version models used low-cost low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED panels, while the Pro model used LTPO panels.
The advantage of LTPO is that it can reduce the screen refresh rate according to the usage environment, thereby achieving low-power driving. It is reported that compared to LTPS technology, it can generally reduce power consumption by 15% -20%.
Due to the relatively high cost and technical threshold of LTPO panels, Apple previously only used this technology in high-end Pro models, but this time it has expanded its application scope to all models.
However, there are reports that BOE has recently secured the main supply of Apple's newly launched entry-level model, the iPhone 16e. The iPhone 16e is an entry-level model launched by Apple after a three-year hiatus, which for the first time uses LTPS OLED panels instead of traditional LCD panels.
Apple plans to make some adjustments to the product line of the new iPhone, such as replacing the Plus model with the iPhone 17 Air model. The iPhone 17 Air is a high-end model that is thinner and lighter than regular models, and will also be equipped with LTPO OLED panels.
Its thickness is 6.25 millimeters, which is 1.5 millimeters thinner than the regular iPhone 16 model (7.8 millimeters) launched last year. The display size is the same as the iPhone 16 Plus, reaching 6.7 inches. Like the regular iPhone 17 model, it will be equipped with the A19 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max models will be equipped with the A19 Pro chip manufactured using TSMC's third-generation 3-nanometer process (N3P).
In terms of price, it is expected that the basic model of iPhone 17 will remain the same as the previous generation, at $799; The iPhone 17 Air model is expected to start at $999; The Pro model and Pro Max model are expected to start selling at $1099 and $1299, respectively. Some opinions also suggest that the price of the iPhone 17 Air model may exceed $1299, making it the highest priced among the four models.
