Rumor has it that Apple ds Vision Pro production
2025-01-06

After rumors earlier last year that Apple was cutting production due to reduced demand for the Vision Pro, there are now reports that the original Vision Pro may now be discontinued.

In October, The Information reported that Apple had abruptly cut production of the Vision Pro and planned to stop producing the current version entirely by the end of 2024. The report also quoted multiple people "directly involved" in the manufacturing of Vision Pro parts as saying that production of the Vision Pro began to scale back early last summer, highlighting that Apple has enough inventory to meet market demand all the way to 2025.

There have been numerous reports of weak demand for the Vision Pro due to its lack of content and high price. According to The Information, Vision Pro suppliers are already producing enough components for 500,000 to 600,000 head-mounted displays. Some suppliers halted production of Vision Pro parts as early as May of last year because of Apple's weak sales forecasts, and warehouses are now filled with tens of thousands of undelivered parts.

According to the report, Apple told Vision Pro assembly plant Lichun Precision to stop production in November last year, and as of October, Lichun was producing about 1,000 Vision Pro per day, only half of its peak output; If sales of the Vision Pro pick up, Apple can still resume production because the production line has not been dismantled.

In addition, it has been revealed that Apple has suspended the development of the second-generation Vision Pro for at least a year to focus on developing a lower-cost head-mounted display product; It's worth noting that Apple told suppliers to prepare to produce 4 million low-cost headsets over the lifetime of future products, but this number is half of the total number that Apple originally told suppliers to produce the original Vision Pro, which means that Apple has lower sales expectations for this cheaper headset product.

Demand for the Vision Pro has been weak because of its high price tag and the lack of a content ecosystem, with Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook describing the device as an "early adopter product" aimed at users interested in cutting-edge technology rather than the broader mass market.

According to The Information, while work on the second-generation Vision Pro has apparently stalled, there are some indications that the company may announce minor updates to the product, namely limited changes to the physical design of the product, such as chip upgrades. On this point, Tianfeng International analyst Guo Ming𫠓¹ and "Bloomberg" reporter Mark Gurman have confirmed, and said that the second generation of Vision Pro is actively under development, and replaced with M5 chip, import Apple Intelligence

Gurman expects the second generation of the product to launch between fall 2025 and spring 2026, and the updated product is expected to have a large number of duplicate components from the original product to offset excess inventory in Apple's supply chain.
