According to Korean media THEELEC reported that LG Display plans to configure equipment in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) production line of its IT products to support the production of OLED screens for Apple iphones. Although the IT OLED production line is currently used to produce iPad OLEDs, the operating rate of the line has decreased due to weak demand.
In order to ensure iPhone OLED production capacity, LG Display has now achieved mass production of iPhone OLED on E6-1, E6-2 and E6-3 production lines. Compared with new production lines, IT is more economical to use existing IT OLED production lines. It will cost about 2 trillion won to build a production line for sixth-generation glass substrates with a monthly output of 15,000 pieces (15K).
Although the IT OLED production line is designed to produce 15K per month, it will cost 3.4 trillion won to build due to new technologies such as tandem stacking. The main difference between iPad OLEDs and iPhone OLEDs is the structure of the substrate and the light-emitting layer.
The iPad OLED uses a glass substrate and thin film package (TFE), while the iPhone OLED uses a polyimide (PI) substrate and thin film package. In addition, the iPad OLED uses a double stacked (tandem) light-emitting layer structure, while the iPhone OLED uses a single stack light-emitting layer structure.
When the IT OLED production line originally designed with a double-layer stacking process is used to produce iPhone OLED, only part of the process needs to be skipped. Therefore, to produce iPhone OLEDs on the IT OLED production line, the additional equipment required is limited to a few devices in the touch process. It is reported that the overall hybrid production will not incur significant additional costs. However, due to the different materials required for iPad OLEDs and iPhone OLEDs, it is expected that appropriate time intervals will be required in the production process if the two products are mixed in the same production line. That is, the raw materials used to produce iPad OLEDs must be consumed before they can be ready to produce iPhone OLEDs.
