It is understood that Samsung Display and LGD have started mass production of OLED panels for Apple iPhone 16. Production is already ramping up ahead of the product launch next month.

According to Korean media ETnews on August 8, Samsung Display and LGD began last month, the OLED  panel production line used by the iPhone 16 series switched to the mass production system. An industry executive familiar with the matter said Samsung Display and LGD both started producing the first OLEDs for the iPhone 16 in June, and production began to ramp up significantly last month.

Apple is expected to ship about 90 million iPhone 16s this year. It is understood that the number of OLED panels is about 120 million pieces, about 30% more than this. It is expected that by the end of this year, Samsung Display's OLED supply (forecast) is about 80 million units, and LG Display's OLED supply is about 43 million units. It is confirmed that the two companies are currently proceeding with the panel production plan in accordance with this output.

With the full supply of OLED panels, the performance of Samsung Display and LGD is expected to improve in the second half of the year. iPhone 16 related sales will be reflected in the third quarter when the panel is delivered, and it is highly likely that the fourth quarter will continue to perform well as the number of OLED orders increases. As the iPhone 16 is Apple's first smartphone with artificial intelligence (AI), it is expected to generate large-scale replacement demand.

LG Display, in particular, is expected to benefit significantly. The supply of LG's new products is expected to increase by more than 10 million units from last year, and the market share by shipments will exceed 30 percent. This year, for the first time, LGD completed its production schedule on time in terms of supplying iPhone OLED panels, which is expected to contribute significantly to its performance.

Last year LG Display delayed approval for iPhone 15 OLED mass production, so Samsung Display increased the initial number and ran into the same problem in 2022.

LG Display previously said at the second quarter results conference that there have been initial supply problems to major customers in the past two years, but this year the company will show a different side through timely mass production and stable supply system. And compared to last year, the company will expand panel shipments.

Samsung Display supplies OLED panels at a similar level to previous models, but profits are expected to increase due to a larger proportion of high value-added products such as Pro and Pro Max. Nearly 60% of the iPhone 16 panels manufactured by Samsung Display are Pro and Pro Max.
