According to Korean media TheElec reports, Samsung Display said that it is preparing to achieve the "zero border" concept products required for the full screen of smartphones, and proposed 3D splicing (stacking), edge brightness control and other technologies to achieve zero border. If realized, it means that the mobile phone screen will no longer be limited by the restrictions of the border, and users will be able to obtain a more shocking visual experience.
"In order for consumers to use the screen as a whole, we need a special design to minimize the exposure of the front-facing camera," Jeong Yong-wook, executive director of Samsung Display, said at the K-Display industry conference. "Samsung is preparing an under-screen camera and zero-bezel concept."
Jeong also showed a picture of Samsung's Galaxy and Apple's iPhone designs evolving from grooves to pinholes to zero borders, and said that in order to achieve zero borders, the light transmittivity of the UPC should be increased to more than 50 percent to optimize the pixel structure. In order to realize zero border, some technical issues such as 3D splicing and edge brightness control are proposed.
The report pointed out that although Jeong Yong-wook did not directly mention it on the day, it is reported that Apple has long asked panel manufacturers such as Samsung Display and LG Display to develop iPhone OLED panels using zero bezels. Apple is keen to achieve an edge-to-edge display, but is reluctant to adopt curved screen technology. This is because curved screens can cause optical distortion in some applications, affecting the user experience. In addition, the resistance of the curved screen is relatively weak, which is inconsistent with Apple's product design concept. The use of zero bezels can expand the user's sense of immersion, and the UPC technology where the front camera module is placed under theOLED panel also needs to be improved than it is now.
Jeong said, The design of ordinary mobile phones started as straight phones, but after the performance was satisfied, flip phones and coasting curve phones also appeared. At a time when 1.3 billion mobile phones were sold a year, the clamshell model sold 350 million units. As feature phones move to smartphones, they are once again marketed in a straight plate format, with smartphone sales now at 1.2 billion units a year. "We expect to sell 20 million foldable phones this year."
Analysts believe that if Samsung can successfully achieve zero bezel full screen technology, then it is possible that at some point in the future, will see the first equipped with this technology iPhone.
