On August 1, according to TheElec, Samsung Display plans to apply low refraction overlay (CPL) on its smartphone OLED, which is expected to achieve commercial application as early as 2025. The CPL forms at the top of the cathode and helps to direct light from the emission layer towards the front of the display panel. As far as IT is known, OLED screens are currently widely used in high refractive index CPL panels, which have the advantage of reducing power consumption. Simply put, the application of low-index CPL in this case can reduce the amount of light loss and further improve the optical efficiency of the display. Samsung Display is currently testing the new technology with Dongjin Semiconductor, Lapto and Hodogaya Chemical companies. It is said that the technology is likely to be first applied to the M15 material, which is expected to be used in the Galaxy S series of phones in 2025, and may be followed by the iPhone. 

In contrast, the adoption of this low-refractive index CPL coating will lengthen the production process and increase costs, so customers (Samsung Electronics and Apple) will need to be convinced to adopt this technology. Samsung display currently the most important OLED panel using M12 material, has been used in the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, Then there's Apple's iPhone 14 Pro series last year and the iPhone 15 series coming out later this year. For non-Apple customers, Samsung Display has developed a separate series of products called the M13, but Samsung Electronics has chosen not to use it, and the industry believes that Google's foldable phone will be the first model to use this material.
