Japan Display Corporation (JDI) announced on July 31 that it has started mass production of smart lighting liquid crystal "LumiFree", which is expected to be used in art museums, theaters and offices. The goal is to reach 10 billion yen in sales by 2026.

JDI said it has begun supplying small quantities to lighting manufacturer Toki Corporation (Oda-ku, Tokyo) and has begun shipping samples to overseas companies. In the future, JDI will increase the number of business partners, mainly lighting equipment manufacturers. In addition to reducing utility costs by adjusting the number of lighting fixtures, LumiFre can mitigate the negative impact of excessive lighting on the landscape and ecosystem.

According to reports, LumiFree is through the development of new liquid crystal materials, changing the refractive index to control the light distribution characteristic, and then realize the free control of the direction of light propagation, such as vertical and horizontal distribution. In addition, LumiFree can also change the size and shape of the light (such as oval, rectangle, etc.).

JDI has previously said that this is the first time in the world to achieve a technology that can control the direction of LED light propagation, although the reduction of energy can achieve better lighting for people, things and objects, so as to reduce light pollution.

JDI has continued to struggle with display sales, Posting nine consecutive years of losses for the fiscal year ended March 23. Lumifree is the first new business that JDI expects to improve profitability. As part of the growth strategy for 2026, JDI established an internal startup organization, took one year to achieve mass production, and is expected to reach 10 billion yen in sales by 2026.
