A Brief Analysis of the Current Situation of Micro OLED Screen: Samsung Display, BOE, LGD, Sony
2023-06-13

At the annual World Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple released a new device product MR Headset "Vision Pro" after a lapse of about eight years, and the entire Micro OLED display industry is also excited. There are views in the industry that the Micro OLED war between China, South Korea and Japan is inevitable.

The Vision Pro single machine is equipped with a total of three displays, of which the two internal Micro OLED displays with the highest unit price are supplied by SONY of Japan and Taiwan's contract manufacturing company TSMC, and LG Display supplies plastic OLEDs for the exterior.

Unlike its rivals, Apple installed this Oledos-based Micro OLED to maximize resolution and significantly improve power consumption. However, due to the high technical entry threshold of Micro OLED, the production cost is also high. It accounts for about 50% of the manufacturing cost of the Vision Pro.

In other words, companies that supply the Vision Pro's internal displays have the most to gain from the new metaverse device market. Among them, China, South Korea, and Japan are competing to seize new markets to ensure the ultra-poor technology of Micro OLED.

LG Display, which can produce miniature OLeds with a resolution of 3,500 PPI or higher and a maximum brightness of 7,000 nits, is currently working with semiconductor companies such as SK Hynix. At CES 2023 earlier this year, a miniature OLED prototype for a 0.42-inch Metaverse device was unveiled.

Micro-oleds based on OLEDoS are mainly divided into the "WOLED+CF" method, which forms a color filter on a white (W) OLED, and the RGB method, which deposits RGB pixels on the same layer. Apple's Vision Pro uses the "WOLED+CF" method. In the future, it is believed that it is more likely to choose RGB Micro-OLED with higher brightness but which has not yet entered the mass production stage.

Samsung Display recently decided to acquire US micro OLED company eMagin for $218 million. In addition, it is building a miniature OLED trial production line in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, and is working on developing XR devices for Samsung Electronics by forming a professional team with Samsung Electric.

An official of Samsung Electronics said, "Metaverse devices are a hot topic, and Samsung Electronics is also preparing for it, and I hope you will look forward to it." We will develop devices and solutions."

Chinese companies have been desperately exploring the Micro OLED market for many years.

Boe is China's largest display maker and a major supplier to Apple. Mass production of 8-inch Micro OLED will begin in 2019, and the 12-inch production line is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in January next year. The production line is expected to have an annual capacity of 5.23 million units.

Boe initially produced miniature OLeds for use in telescopes, among others, but is now focusing on product development to install them in AR and VR-related devices. "We are carefully building the OLED production line for IT, but we are working hard on technology development, we can't lag behind in terms of technology, and as far as AR and VR are concerned, we are focusing on developing it," boe said in response to questions from investors about its microdisplay business plans, according to Donghwasoon.

At the International Information Display Association (SID) held in Los Angeles this year, BOE (BOE) launched a 4k resolution Micro OLED prototype, which attracted wide attention. It comes with a 1.3-inch Micro OLED display with a resolution of 4032 PPI and a brightness of 5,000 nits.

Currently, SONY supplies the most expensive Micro-OLED for the Apple Vision Pro, but Apple is expected to diversify its sourcing and launch more low-end models to lower the consumer purchase threshold for MR Headsets. "No matter how great the technology and features are, you can't capture the future market by charging multiple times more than your competitors' products," Bloomberg reported. "Apple is already working on a cheaper version of the device."

Therefore, in addition to SONY is already supplying Micro OLED, LG Display, Samsung Display, BOE may enter the candidate list in the future. As a result, competition is bound to intensify.

"At present, South Korea's technology in areas such as OLED is better than its competitors, but the technology gap in the future market is not large, and it must maintain a competitive edge," he said.
