China-Japan Joint Anti-Korean Large-Size OLED Change-over!
2023-04-19

Chinese manufacturers are speeding up the pace of large-size OLED lane changes. After TCL CSOT and JOLED cooperation on printing OLED, Huike recently announced and JDI joint eLEAP OLED. In large-size OLEDs, Chinese and Japanese manufacturers are trying to break South Korea's long-standing monopoly. Currently, large-size OLED panels are exclusively supplied by South Korean manufacturers, such as LG Display (LGD) producing W-OLED and Samsung Display producing QD-OLED. However, the production costs of these two technologies are high, and they are confined to the high-end TV market and have not been widely adopted. Chinese manufacturers hope to cooperate with Japanese manufacturers JDI and JOLED to accelerate the mass production of eLEAP OLED and printed OLED with lower cost. At that time, the domestic low-cost OLED will change the global large-size OLED panel market pattern and accelerate the popularity of OLED TV. China is racing to catch up with mainland China as the world's largest LCD panel producer, but South Korea still dominates large-size OLEDs. LG Display has long dominated the global market for large-size OLED panels. 2013 marks the first year of the OLED TV industry. At that time, Samsung Display and LGD started mass production of large-size OLED. However, Samsung Display chose the wrong technical route and the yield of large-size OLED was too low, so it had to give up temporarily and chose the direction of QLED to compete with LGD. LGD adheres to the direction of W-OLED technology, constantly improves the process, continuously improves yield and expands production capacity, and promotes the gradual penetration of large-size W-OLED in the high-end TV market. About 6.29 million OLED TVS will be shipped globally in 2022 and 7.41 million in 2023. Samsung Display has never given up on large-size OLED, and has been studying. In the fourth quarter of 2021, QD-OLED was mass-produced, and was recognized by Samsung Electronics, SONY and other manufacturers. In 2022, Samsung Display shipped about 450,000 pieces of QD-OLED. At present, the yield of Samsung display QD-OLED has reached 90%, but the yield and performance need to be further improved, and the production expansion has not been decided for the time being. At the same time, Samsung Display is also actively deploying the medium-size OLED business. Samsung Display already dominates the mid-size OLED market. Omdia expects Samsung to ship about 6 million display OLED notebook panels in 2022, rising to 8.5 million in 2023. However, Samsung Display announced on April 4 that IT will invest 4.1 trillion won to build an 8.6-generation OLED production line in Korea by 2026. By then, Samsung Display will expand its lead in OLED panels by producing 10 million OLED units per year. While Korea continues to strengthen its advantage of large-size OLED, China's large-size OLED layout is still in the experimental stage. It is understood that BOE has built a test line of steaming W-OLED and printing OLED in Hefei, and developed the world's first 55 inch 8K printed OLED, 95 inch 8K W-OLED, 55 inch 8K printed AMQLED and so on. TCL Technology led the establishment of the National Printing and flexible Display Innovation Center, and its subsidiary Guangdong Juhua invested in the construction of Guangzhou 4.5 generation printing OLED test line, and developed 31-inch QD-OLED, 31-inch electroluminescent diode (QLED), 31-inch flexible printing OLED, 65-inch 8K printing OLED, etc. Whitco and Vicinosa have also set up test lines to actively promote research on large-size OLED. Currently, the world's mainstream large-size OLED technologies are LGD WOLED and Samsung Display QD-OLED, which both adopt vacuum evaporation method and metal mask plate patterning. However, the device and luminous structure are very complex and the production cost is high. After a decade of development OLED TVS remain at the high end of the market. If Chinese manufacturers follow the path of W-OLED or QD-OLED technology, it will not only be difficult to avoid the relevant patents of Korean manufacturers, but also face the risk of long-term losses. For example, in the small and medium-sized OLED sector, Chinese manufacturers who follow Samsung Display's direction face indirect patent lawsuits from Samsung Display and the pressure of long-term losses. More importantly, LGD WOLED's transition hasn't been very successful. The high cost of LGD WOLED, the slow replacement of large-size LCD, the high investment, the long return cycle, LGD into financial crisis, had to borrow money from LG Group to keep the business running. Large-size OLED requires a lower-cost differentiation process plan, so printed OLED, eLEAP OLED, etc. have become an important direction of layout for Chinese panel manufacturers. However, Chinese manufacturers did not build the car behind closed doors, but with the printing OLED, eLEAP OLED has a long-term technical accumulation of Japanese manufacturers JOLED, JDI joint research. TCL Huaxing bet on printing OLED technology direction. Because the printing display process is simple, the material utilization rate can reach more than 90%, and the cost advantage is obvious, it is an important technical way to break through the evaporation route in the field of large size products. In 2020, TCL Huaxing signed an investment agreement with JOLED to invest 30 billion yen and acquire 10.76% of JOLED's shares. In the past two years, TCL Huaxing has obtained product development and process technology accumulation in JOLED production line, obtained related patent authorization of printed OLED, developed the world's first 65-inch 8K printed OLED sample, and further opened up the equipment and material industry chain in Japan to accelerate the promotion of mass production technology. The yield and effect of TCL Huaxing printing OLED technology in mass production have been recognized by many customers. Cao Yong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said he was very excited to see the samples of printed OLED displayed by relevant panel companies. He said China has already achieved partial leadership in printing display, and relevant materials and processes are basically mature, so the mass production of printed OLED will soon be in the future. Whitco is more interested in eLEAP's OLED technology direction. eLEAP is the world's first OLED technology that uses maskless deposition and photolithography to dramatically increase brightness, longevity, and ease of production to reduce production costs. On April 7, Weco and JDI signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic alliance. The two companies will work together to build the world's most advanced eLEAP OLED panel factory through long-term, comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in the next generation eLEAP OLED, joint R&D center and advanced vehicle panel business. The target is to start mass production by 2025. If TCL Hwaseong Printing OLED and Weleap OLED succeed in mass production, it will not only break the monopoly of large-size OLED in Korea, but also take the lead. Analyst Wang Qiang (pseudonym) pointed out that Japan's further development shows that the industry is in urgent need of external financial support. Technical cooperation with Chinese manufacturers can not only obtain a certain source of funds, but also continue to promote the research and development of OLED technology. Both sides are more likely to break through the blockade of large-size OLED technology in South Korea and realize lane overtaking. From the test line to the mass production line no man's land to face more challenges ideal plump, realistic bone sense. There is no previous experience to use for reference, there are more uncertain challenges. Up to now, JOLED printing OLED mass production progress is not smooth, eLEAP OLED is still in the trial line stage, TCL Huaxing, Huike in the mass production road still need more exploration. There are some technical difficulties in printing OLED backplane manufacturing process, OLED materials, packaging materials, flexible module equipment, printing equipment and so on. In terms of the backplane process, large-size printed OLED needs TFT with higher mobility and more stability, so oxide TFT is more suitable for the development of printed OLED. At present, there are many oxide semiconductor materials, including IZTO, IGTO, IGZTO, Ln-IZO, etc., most of which have mobility between 10-20cm ²/Vs. Now the industry is looking for semiconductor materials that can exceed 30cm²/Vs. eLEAP OLED also faces more unknown challenges, such as the backplane manufacturing process and OLED materials. JDI delivered the first eLEAP OLED samples to customers in August 2022 and plans to begin mass production of eLEAP in 2024. However, because eLEAP OLED uses mask less deposition and lithography technology, there are still challenges such as crosstalk, material destruction, and yield reduction. In particular, dry engraving process corrodes metals, and strong light can also cause some damage to OLED materials. Reviewing the mass production process of LGD and Samsung Display large-size OLED, it can be seen that the mass-production breakthrough of large-size OLED is not easy. Samsung Display originally used RGB LTPS OLED technology, but the mass production was blocked, and it took nearly 10 years of research and development to successfully mass-produce QD-OLED, but the cost of QD-OLED is still very high. Constant improvement is needed to have any hope of competing with LGDS. Chinese panel manufacturers should be fully prepared to change lanes and overtake vehicles or technology leaders should have the courage to bear the cost of trial and error, so as to have a chance to win in the long-term competition.
