Samsung Display is developing a 13.3-inch OLED panel for future MacBook Air models and plans to gradually convert multiple Apple product lines to OLED, according to The Elec.
In addition to the Macbook, LG Display was also developing OLED screens for the new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro, but lacked enough capacity to produce the OLED panels needed for the MacBook Air, which led Apple to choose Samsung.
Samsung Display is also said to be planning to develop an 11-inch OLED panel for next year's iPad, suggesting that Samsung Display could steal some 11-inch "iPad Pro" orders from LG Display.
As far as product development goes, Apple is preparing to launch new OLED iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models.
The Elec isn't sure when the OLED MacBook Air will be released, they think it could be around two years. Display industry analyst Ross Young has previously said he expects a "MacBook Air" with OLED panels to launch in 2024.
Apple initially wanted Samsung to offer a 10.86-inch OLED panel for the iPad Air, which would have been its first OLED iPad, but due to the cost and capacity issues of single-layer OLED, as well as the need to take into account the iPad Air's differentiation from the iPad Pro, Apple eventually scrapped the project. Apple is now said to have moved to a more reliable double-layer OLED panel, which is expected to debut in the "iPad Pro" next year.
According to the report, Samsung's project to develop a 13.3-inch OLED panel for the MacBook Air is actually a trial run for mass production of OLED panels for future MacBook Pro models.
