LX Semicon is attracting attention for providing display driver chips (DDI) for the Apple iPhone 15 (working title) series, which is scheduled to be released this fall. LX Semicon supplies DDI to LG Display and BOE, which supplies OLED panels for the iPhone 15.

According to South Korean media ETnews reported on March 26, LX Semicon has won an order for iPhone 15 series DDI. Like its predecessor, the iPhone 15 series comes in four models. Based on the display, they are the 6.1-inch iPhone 15, the 6.6-inch 15 Plus, and the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and the 6.6-inch Pro Max. It is usually divided into two types of generic models and two types of high-end models. The new model is nearly the same size as the previous iPhone 14 series, but it features a hole-out display that was only available on two Pro models extended to all models.

It is understood that LX Semicon will supply DDI for two iPhone 15 Pro models and two general-purpose models. LG Display makes specialty models of OLED, BOE makes general-purpose models of OLED, and LX Semicon works with both LG Display and BOE. 'I understand Apple has designated LX Semicon, a DDI supplier, to supply only LG Display and BOE,' said one display industry official.

The number of DDI that LX Semicon will supply for the iPhone 15 series has yet to be confirmed. Given the number of iphones sold, however, that percentage is not expected to be small. About 200 million iphones are sold each year. Samsung Displays supplies about 70 percent of the panels for all models. LG Display and BOE will take the remaining 30 per cent. LG Display has 20 per cent and BOE 10 per cent. With simple arithmetic, LX Semicon can deliver up to 60 million DDI chips.

Supplies vary from time to time. It could change depending on how many iphones are sold, as well as display makers. If Company A's product is defective, the quantity is transferred to Company B. However, LX Semicon is expected to make a big profit as it has cooperation with LG Display and BOE and has entered the supply chain of iPhone 15, a popular smartphone.
