DSCC's latest update to the Quarterly Foldable/Rollable Display Shipment and Technology Report sees 37 different models from at least 10 different brands that will ship in 2023.
DSCC expects foldable smartphones to grow 45 percent to 18.6 meters in 2023 and expects foldable panel shipments to rise 52 percent to 23.2 meters due to lower prices, better performance improvements, and camera and screen improvements. In 2023, more foldable phones will use COE technology, which can significantly improve display efficiency, reduce display thickness, and improve the durability of foldable displays. Although COE was first applied to folding panels by Samsung Display, in 2023, DSCC expects many products in folding mode to use Chinese panel factories to provide polaris-free solutions. Meanwhile, DSCC expects the penetration rate of CoE solutions to increase from 24% of the folding display market in 2022 to 38% in 2023.
Another interesting finding is the Multi-Fold display (Z-type), which is relatively easy to implement technically compared to the popular curling/scrolling mobile phones in the consumer market. Multi-Folds can bring larger displays into the smartphone market and be compatible with better tablet performance. Chinese brands are already previewing multi-fold products, which are expected to hit the market in 2024.
Although the capacity base of foldable display market is not large enough, Chinese brands are trying to reduce prices and plan high and low models to cope with different consumer markets. Meanwhile, Transsion's brands focusing on overseas emerging markets are also actively planning foldable mobile phone products. DSCC believes that 2023 will be a hot year for folding market, especially for folding brands in China.
