Korean media reported that before the opening of the 8th generation OLED market for IT, Japan's strongest evaporation equipment manufacturer, Canon Tokki, has attracted attention. Although Samsung and LG monitors are working with companies other than Canon Tokki to develop vaporizers, Apple, the largest IT company, is known to still prefer Canon Tokki.
On October 18, industry insiders said Samsung and LG Display had been developing the 8th generation OLED deposition machine for IT for more than a year, various observations are emerging. This is because of the distance between tens of billions of investments in IT ordering of Generation 8 OLED devices is getting closer. Samsung monitors are likely to order their first 8G OLED evaporator for IT by the end of this year or early next year at the latest.
There are different problems or solutions for the vapor deposition machine developed by Samsung and LG. That's because both Samsung and LG have worked with companies other than Canon Tokki, Apple's first choice for its biggest customer in the market.
According to the report, the 8th generation full-cut vertical vapor deposition machine developed by Samsung Monitor in cooperation with ULVAC of Japan is difficult to provide to Apple. ULVAC's vapor deposition machine is likely to be installed in the first stage of Samsung Display Generation 8 OLED production line T8 (tentative name), with the planned mass production of single stacked OLEDs.
It is understood that the T8 phase 1 is also planned to buy some time for dual-dual-OLED production, but mass production will be limited to the T8 phase 1 production capacity of 15,000 tablets (15K) per month.
Industry insiders estimate that Samsung Display will most likely install Canon Tokki's 8th generation semi-cut horizontal gas evaporator on T8 Phase II, which is expected to be an Apple-only line for mass production of dual series OLED. Supplying Apple with 8-generation OLEDs for IT is likely to become a major revenue source for the business.
Another industry source estimated that if Samsung Display stops the development of ULVAC devices, Canon Tokki devices will be installed from the first stage of the T8 line.
Unlike Samsung Display, which has a large customer of Samsung Electronics, Apple is the only customer of LG Display's medium and small OLED business. LG Display has developed and evaluated the 8th generation of half-cut horizontal vaporizer using Sunic System's deposition device, Yas's evaporation source, and LG Innotek's mask, but it has not yet been approved by Apple. LG Display has not ruled out using Canon Tokki.
In the past, Samsung Display was the main supplier of the sixth-generation OLED, but now there are several potential customers for the eighth-generation OLED, including Samsung Display, LG Display and Chinese panel factories. Since last year, Canon Tokki has maintained its position of "order-to-develop" rather than jointly develop equipment. If Canon Tokki co-develops equipment with a specific panel manufacturer, it may be bound to an exclusive contract, resulting in business disruption.
The Canon Tokki vaporizer favored by Apple will eventually lead the IT 8-generation OLED market, but some say the development of the new device is still in its early stages and we will have to wait for the results. "There is hardly a time when a new generation of devices is being developed without opposition," says one industry insider.
