November 22 - LG Display has developed a new "stealth" speaker technology for cars that uses a passport-sized vibrating panel to generate sound. The technology was developed with an unnamed "global audio company" and is expected to be available in car interiors next year, in places such as dashboards and ceilings.

The South Korean tech giant's Thin Actuator Sound Solution is marketed as an alternative to traditional speaker systems in cars and other vehicles, IT Home has learned. Unlike current on-board speaker systems, which use heavy-duty components such as voice coils, voice pads and magnets, the thin actuator sound solution uses LG Display's thin-film actuator technology to generate sound by vibrating the Display panel and various materials in the car, which LG Display claims will result in a "rich 3D immersive sound experience."

The panel itself is 2.5mm thick (about two coins stacked on top of each other) and has a size of 150mm by 90mm, enabling it to be installed in unconventional locations such as dashboards, ceilings, struts and headrests. According to LG Display, the panel weighs 40 grams, making it only 30 percent as heavy as a traditional car speaker and 10 percent as thick.

LG Display and SONY have both used similar vibrating panels in OLED TVS, but while the technology itself is not an entirely new innovation, it has yet to be seen widely adopted as a replacement for traditional sound systems. LG Display says it plans to commercially produce a thin actuator sound solution for cars in the first half of next year, and we'll hear how it actually performs at the Consumer Electronics Show 2023 in Las Vegas in January.
