BOE has successfully licensed the supply of OLED panels for the iPhone 16 series
2024-09-03

According to Korean media on September 2, BOE and Samsung Display and LGD were listed as panel partners of Apple's new flagship mobile phone iPhone 16 series, taking the lead in obtaining Apple's supply approval. According to South Korean industry sources, despite the strict conditions, BOE has successfully obtained a supply license for the iPhone 16 series OLED panels. It was originally expected that the entire iPhone 16 series would adopt the BRS (bezel reduction structure) design, but it is expected that this time it will only be applied to the Pro series. BRS is a borderless technology that designs the bezels at the bottom of the panel as thin as possible, making it possible to create ultra-thin bezel displays. The method is to reduce the area of the lower border by winding the bottom copper wire up. Last year, Samsung Display and LG Display provided displays with the technology to the iPhone 15 Pro series at Apple's request, but it is understood that there were some problems during the packaging process due to actual installation. The packaging process is the last process in the OLED manufacturing process, which is to seal the product to prevent oxygen and water from infiltrating into the organic matter, which can extend the service life of the product. It is reported that a number of panels have warped. BRS was used in the early days of the product market. According to South Korean Display industry executives, BRS is not a very difficult technology, but it is understood that when Samsung Display y and LG Display applied it to the iPhone 15 Pro series, there were issues such as panel warping. For the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, the display size is expected to gradually increase. According to the information, the Pro is expected to increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches from the previous generation, and the Pro Max is expected to increase from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. As the display size increases, the number of pixels that make up the overall resolution is expected to gradually increase. The OLED panels installed in the two Pro series models use the same low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) process technology as their predecessors. LTPO is a hybrid thin film transistor (TFT) process technology that combines low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) and oxide, a high-value product that complements the shortcomings of both materials. On the other hand, the regular iPhone 16 and Plus are equipped with LTPS OLED. According to industry sources, Apple is expected to expand the application of LTPO OLED to its universal product line starting with the iPhone 17 series to be released next year.
