Global shipments of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels grew rapidly last year on the back of devices such as smartphones and laptops. According to market research firm DSCC on the 20th, shipments of OLED panels in the fourth quarter of last year were 292 million units. This represents a 41% increase compared to the previous quarter and a 31% increase compared to the same period last year.

Even extending the timeline to the second half of last year, shipments are growing sharply. The number of OLED smartphones in the second half of last year increased by 42% from the first half and 12% from the same period last year. In the same period, OLEDsmart watches also rose 101% from the first half of the year, up 1% from the same period last year. OLED tablets increased 58 percent from the first half of the year and 15 percent from the same period last year. OLED laptops increased 64% compared to the first half of the year.

"The second half of last year saw an overall recovery trend as inventories normalized in 2022 and the first half of last year," the DSCC explained.

In terms of manufacturers' OLED smartphone shipments, Apple benefited from the growth momentum of the iphone14 and iphone15 pro max in the fourth quarter of last year, growing 77% from the previous quarter. During the same period, Samsung Electronics saw A 25% increase due to the growth of the galaxy S23, S24 and A series.

Samsung Display topped the list with 37% market share. Samsung Display's OLED smartphone sales increased 26% from the previous quarter. However, due to the fierce pursuit of BOE and LG Display, Samsung Display's market share dropped 7% from 44% in the third quarter of last year to 37% in the fourth quarter.

In fact, due to favorable iphone sales, BOE rose from 14% in the third quarter of last year to 15% in the fourth quarter, showing an upward trend. LG Display also increased its market share from 10% o 13% with the help of the iphone.
