LGD expands the application of heavy hydrogen, and the arrival of bright and long-lived OLED is accelerated

According to Korean media ETnews news, LG Display began to expand the research and development of heavy hydrogen applications in OLEDpanels. The main research and development direction is to extend the heavy hydrogen originally only used for blue material layers to red, green and OLED essential material layers.



"LG Display is negotiating with major partners to expand the technology strategy and engineering implementation methods for heavy hydrogen, and is developing new heavy hydrogen materials," an official said.

Heavy hydrogen is twice as heavy as normal hydrogen. If the dihydrogen is used in OLED, it can stabilize the molecular binding structure, emit brighter light than before, and extend the life.

LG Display will apply heavy hydrogen to OLED panels from the end of 2021. However, heavy hydrogen is only used in certain fields because it takes time and money to make materials and replace hydrogen. In large OLED panels, heavy hydrogen is also only used on blue materials. LG Display is said to have expanded its application range to further improve the performance of OLED panels after confirming the effect of heavy hydrogen.

According to experts, the drawback of heavy hydrogenation of OLED materials is that the "melting efficiency" decreases, from a solid to a liquid. LG Display is reportedly focusing on research to solve the problem. Due to the high cost burden of heavy hydrogenation, it is reported that new processes such as cost saving methods are being studied to expand the scope of application.

If LG Display improves the utilization of heavy hydrogen, it is possible to use heavy hydrogen not only in large-screen OLED panels, but also in small and medium-sized panels. LG Display's heavy hydrogen technology is limited to TV panels. If the application is expanded in the future, panels for smartphones and IT devices will also be introduced.
