South Korean Display giant LG Display Co LTD is expected to turn a profit by supplying high-end TV panels to Samsung Electronics Co LTD as soon as this quarter, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

LGD aims to supply 2m units next year and increase shipments to 3m to 5m in subsequent years, according to people familiar with the matter. The initial supply to Samsung is likely to be 77 "and 83" white OLED (WOLED) TV panels.

For LGD, the order for 2 million OLED panels is a big boost, worth at least $1.5 billion, or 20 to 30 percent of the total capacity of large-size OLED panels, bringing capacity to full capacity.

The deal shows that Samsung Electronics is aggressively seeking to expand in the high-end OLED TV segment to escape increased competition in the low-end segment and from mainland Chinese suppliers. OLED panels are nearly five times more valuable than liquid crystal display (LCD) panels.

The deal gives Samsung a chance to overtake Sony as the world's second-largest supplier of OLED TVS. According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung currently accounts for just 6.1 percent of the OLED TV market, behind LG Electronics' 54.6 percent and Sony's 26.1 percent.

Analysts had speculated that LGD was approaching a new customer to supply OLED TV panels. Reuters first named Samsung Electronics as the customer.

Samsung is the world's largest TV maker, but has been slower to adopt OLED TVS than rival LG. Samsung had thought OLED technology would be more suitable for smaller products such as smartphones and tablets because of its high cost.

Analysts say LGD's OLED factories have been operating at full capacity because of a lack of customers and the waning of peak demand for new TVS due to the pandemic.

LGD supplies OLED TV panels to LG Electronics and Sony, as well as smartphone displays to Apple.

Samsung Electronics also has its own display manufacturing business, Samsung Display, but currently focuses on producing OLED screens for smartphones for Apple and Samsung.
