Samsung and LG are investing billions of dollars in new production lines to capture the OLED mid-size screen market. The screens are expected to be used in Apple's future ipads and Mac products to create a better visual experience for users.
OLED screens are more difficult to manufacture than LCD screens, especially large and medium-sized ones, Nikkei Asia reported. But OLED screens have advantages such as higher contrast, lower power consumption and thinner thickness, so they are favored by companies such as Apple. Apple's iPhone and Apple Watch already have OLED screens, while ipads and Macs still use LCD screens.
Apple is rumored to be planning to launch an iPad Pro with an OLED screen in 2024 and a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen in 2026. To meet Apple's demand, both Samsung and LG are accelerating the expansion of OLED production capacity and adopting more advanced technologies to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.
Samsung is investing $3.05 billion to build a new OLED production line at its main plant in Dangjin, South Korea. These lines will use an 8.6-generation glass substrate, which is more than twice the size of the six-generation glass substrate currently in use, allowing for more screen panels. Samsung is expected to begin mass production of mid-size OLED screens in 2026, just in time for the launch of the new MacBook Pro.
LG is investing $2.5 billion (17.325 billion yuan) to build a new OLED production line at its Paju plant. LG has yet to catch up with Samsung and is still using a sixth-generation glass substrate. However, LG also has the advantage of having a unique white light OLED technology that can provide a more even and stable display.
Samsung and LG are both leaders in the global OLED market, with about 80 per cent of the market. But they also face stiff competition from Chinese players such as BOE, Visionox, and EDO, which already dominate the LCD market, and are aggressively expanding OLED production capacity. However, Chinese manufacturers have yet to make significant headway in mid-size OLED screens, which are seen as the last growth market in the display industry and the target of a battle between Samsung and LG.
