JDI and HKC sign memorandum of understanding to jointly build a wafer factory adopting eLeap technology

Japan Display Co., LTD. (JDI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on April 7, 2023 to form a strategic alliance with the world's third largest display maker, Huike Co., LTD. (HKC), according to JDI's website. As global strategic partners, JDI and HKC will collaborate on next-generation OLED technology, production lines, global innovation and industrialization centers, and high-end in-vehicle display businesses.

JDI considers its eLEAP and HMO to be epochal and revolutionary advances in display technology. Therefore, providing eLEAP and HMO to other display manufacturers is an opportunity to create a whole new global display ecosystem that offers unprecedented value for money to customers worldwide.

It is reported that JDI and HKC will strive to sign the final strategic alliance agreement by June 2023, including: 1. JDI and HKC have entered into a long-term, comprehensive and collaborative global strategic partnership, working together on eLEAP, a global innovation and industrialization center, and high-end on-board display business; 2. JDI and HKC will jointly plan and build a world-class eLEAP production line, aiming for mass production in 2025.

In addition, JDI and HKC will work together to grow into the world's leading provider of integrated high-end display solutions, and have established the following long-term strategic goals in the mid-to-high-end display sector: 1. Wearable devices: No.1 in shipments and market share by 2027; 2. Automobile: World No.1 in shipments and market share in 2028; 3. VR: No.1 in shipments and market share in the world by 2028; 4. Desktop display: No.1 in shipments and market share in the world by 2028; 5. Laptops and tablets: Third in shipments and market share by 2028.

According to the report, JDI and HKC both believe that combining JDI's patented technology and manufacturing capabilities, which are number one in the world, with HKC's cost competitiveness and sales advantages, as well as the abundant human capital of the two companies, will help JDI and HKC to significantly increase their enterprise value, so the memorandum of understanding of strategic alliance was signed.

JDI developed the mass production technology of next-generation OLED eLEAP in May 2022 and shipped samples in August the same year. "eLEAP" can greatly improve product brightness, life, and production method is simple, can restrain the production cost.

According to reports, in the current mass production of OLED display screens, the evaporation mode using FMM organic materials (FMM mode) is widely used, while eLEAP does not use FMM at all, through the mask less organic materials evaporation on the substrate, to generate OLED pixels in the way of lithography.

Compared with FMM OLED, eLEAP's luminous area is increased to 60 percent (300ppi resolution based on JDI standard product data), more than double that of FMM. By combining with backplane technology and HMO technology, it is possible to dramatically improve peak brightness, lifetime, and power consumption, which are the weaknesses of OLED technology.

JDI stated that the MOU includes that JDI and HKC agree to carry out long-term, comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in the fields of next generation OLED eLEAP, joint research and development center (global innovation and industrialization center), high-end automotive panel business, and jointly build the world's most advanced eLEAP factory. The target is to start mass production by 2025.

JDI stated that the two sides will work together to achieve the following medium and long-term strategic development objectives: In 2027, it will become the first in the world in terms of shipments and market share in the high-level field of wearable devices; in 2028, it will become the first in the middle and high-level market share in the automotive field; in 2028, it will become the first in the middle and high-level field of VR; and in 2028, it will become the first in the middle and high-level field of pens and tablets Third.

JDI said that HKC is a company that has achieved rapid growth in the field of large-size panels in recent years, and plans to go public in China in the near future. HKC's 8.6 generation production lines in Chongqing, Chuzhou, Mianyang and Changsha have started mass production since 2017, with rapid expansion of revenue and strong cost competitiveness, sales power, motor power and capital capacity.

According to the Japanese media, the size and investment of the "eLEAP" plant will be evaluated by HKC in the future, and JDI will provide technical assistance to HKC or send staff to support HKC when mass production begins.
