Technological breakthroughs in OLED materials could lead to cheaper cell phones, televisions and monitors

Researchers at Pusan National University in South Korea are one step closer to creating economically viable, solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that are no slouchier in terms of durability and efficiency. In other words, cheaper OLED devices like smartphones, TVS and displays may not be far behind.

As the researchers explain, while current OLEDproduction is expensive and labor-intensive, solution processed OLEDs promise to be more affordable, but so far it has been limited by efficiency and durability issues due to manufacturing difficulties.


To circumvent this problem, the researchers synthesized and characterized a crosslinked hole-injected layer (HIL) material with over 99% solvent resistance and used it to manufacture a solution processed red phosphorescent OLED device.


The new HIL material has optimal energy levels, as well as high mobility and excellent film forming properties, which are critical for commercial viability, the team said. In fact, according to Do-Hoon Hwang, a professor at Pusan National University, the material achieves greater efficiency and longevity than the most widely used HIL material.


OLEDs have been around for decades, with the first practical device dating back to Eastman Kodak in 1987. Mainstream implementations were years away, and it wasn't until 2007 that the first OLED TV hit the market in the form of the SONY XEL-1.


SONY's display measures just 11 inches diagonally and has a 960 x 540 resolution, which means it doesn't technically even qualify as an HD TV. With a suggested price of $2,499 when it debuted, it's more of a technology showcase than something you actually buy for everyday use.


It is only recently that OLED devices have started to gain more mainstream adoption as pricing has dropped from the stratosphere. OLEDs generally offer better image quality than leds. They are also generally more power-efficient and lighter than their LED counterparts, and have superior response times.
